YOUR GOAL IS TO BUILD MUSCLE AND BURN FAT. In case you aren’t quite sure, your goal with both the nutrition and workout portions of your weight loss plan should be to build muscle and to burn fat. Nutrition and workouts build upon each other to achieve this goal. As such, you must think of your approach to them simultaneously.

I worked with a friend before who bemoaned how little success she had been seeing as she “killed” herself to get into shape trying to follow some generic weight loss programs. As we spoke, what really concerned me was how much she talked about missing food, and how hard it was to eat less. I asked her to keep a food journal for a week, so that we could see what it was that she was consuming.

I wasn’t sure if she would actually be COMPLETELY honest about all that she was taking in. We continued the conversation by surveying her house. The refrigerator/freezer was chock full of ‘forbidden fruits” including cheeses, fatty meats (including bacon!), milk, butter, sour cream, soda pop, muffins, croissants, concentrated fruit juices, ice cream, and even frozen chocolate bars! Items in the pantry included a variety of breads, cookies, potato chips, corn chips, cake mixes, crackers, and salted nuts.

REALITY CHECK! Everyone else in the family was also overweight because of the kind of food available to them. Someday in the not so distant future, her kids will be fighting the same battle, wondering why they are so fat and unable to control their weight even when using weight loss programs.
